AutoRama

E-mail Print PDF

If the crowd was an accurate indicator of the success of the 49th annual AutoRama it was a resounding success. Market Hall was filled to capacity with spectators, vendors and participants. There was a steady influx of people from the time the doors opened on Friday until the doors were closed on Sunday evening. Thanks go out to all of the LSCC members that worked so hard to make the show such a success.

Our display this year was among the best we have ever assembled. Our new stanchions worked great and looked fantastic. Each of our entries won an award. Dwain won Best in Class with his 77 XR7, Dr. Joe took home two Outstanding in Class awards for his 69 Drag Pack and his 69 convertible. Gene won Outstanding in Class with his 72 convertible, Doug was awarded Outstanding in Class for his Eliminator, and I won a place award with my 71. Aside from the Cougars, LSCC member Maury Seitz won Best in Class with his Barracuda.

There were a few hiccups along the way. The move in took a little longer than we would have liked. Fortunately the weather was cooperative so nobody was waiting in the cold or rain. I'm sure next year things will go even smoother.

Among the highlights of the show was the burn-out contest. If you were fortunate enough to see the Sunday show you were treated to one of LSCC's own representing the Cougar brand. Mat Tieken entered his 70 Cougar in the contest and created the best one-wheel burnout smoke screens I have ever witnessed, A posi-track would have made him a certain winner. His car had my vote for the best- looking vehicle entered.

Now that we have one under our belt, next year's 50th annual show is sure to be the best yet. Mark your calendars, and get your cars ready, it's just one year away.

Cougar Commercial

E-mail Print PDF

Its always exciting to see a Cougar featured in the media. Cougars rarely get the press they deserve. Its even more exciting when it is a Cougar with which we're all familiar. If you saw the Scottsdale Barrett Jackson auction this week on television you were treated to one of these rare media events. Dr. Joe Valenti's Cougar took center stage in a commercial for Hagerty Insurance.

Doug Bodensteiner, President of The Lone Star Cougar Club, was contacted by the production company for Hagerty Insurance. They had an idea for a commercial concept and were looking for a Cougar convertible to use. Dr. Joe's red 69 was perfect for the job. Doug trailered the car down to a ranch outside of Austin for a long day of filming. After 10 hours of work in the wind and dust they had the footage needed for their commercial.

The Hagerty commercial first aired during the 2009 BJ auction. Congratulations to out to Dr. Joe. Thanks to Doug and Dr. Joe for bringing some well deserved exposure to the Mercury Cougar.

See the commercial.

Cougars Prowl Wolfe City

What started as a cool and crisp morning quickly warmed up to a sunny 80 degrees. The winds were light. A perfect fall day for a car show. A group of LSCC members met at Ray's house for a cruise to the annual Wolfe City Cruisin' Autumn Car and Truck Show. Ray in his orange 67, Doug and Teal in their newly finished white Eliminator, Bob and Mark in Bob's big block 68, I with my 71, and  Matt and Shelia in their Red 70 caravanned together to the show. Once we got there we were joined by Richard with his 78.

With 339 registered entries and many additional non-registered vehicles, it was a record setting show show for Wolfe City. The spectator parking lot seemed to have as many cars as were participating in the show. There was a constant stream of people looking at the cars and our Cougars drew a lot of attention. Being some distance from DFW, there were many cars that are not normally seen at the local shows. Of course there were too many late-model Mustangs, Corvettes, and Camaros, but there was also a wide variety of less often seen models.

If you haven't been to the Wolfe City show, you should make it a point to go to the next one. Its a great venue. There is plenty of parking, restrooms and food and drink is available, There was an art and craft sale and a bake sale in the gymnasium. There was door prizes, music, and a 50/50 raffle. All or the proceeds went to support local charities, scholarships, and the local library. Great weather, lots of cars and a good cause makes for a day well spent.
